Pansy wouldn’t look at her. She shoved another couple of books and quills into her school trunk and closed it with a thump. Her father’s hawk owl sat on the bed post and spread his wings impatiently.
The other girls had dashed away at Padma’s arrival, but all their trunks were opened and books and skirts and stockings were lying everywhere, waiting to be packed.
Her nervous hands found the letter on the desk.
“Leave that!” Pansy hissed.
“I don’t understand!” Now they were finally facing each other. “What does he offer?” She bit her lip. They were standing close together, Pansy’s hand forcing the paper from her.
“Aren’t you sorry?” she pleaded. “Hogwarts has been your home, too. There will be protection!”
At this Pansy snorted. “Don’t be naïve.”
“I can’t believe you’re leaving me”, Padma whispered.
Pansy came closer as if to kiss her, and for a mad second both options, staying safely together at Hogwarts and going away with Pansy, seemed equally possible. Then she said, “I am sorry.”
And again both options were equally impossible.
The door opened, giving room to four girls chatting and clattering with their belongings. Padma returned to her own dormitory.
