The Dinner Guest
Lyra arrived at dinner expecting a dull evening with yet another female scholar eager to prove she could be as to be bored by another female scholar desperately trying to gain some respect by demonstrating that they could be every bit as pompous and long-winded as the men.
She was completely unprepared for Mrs. Coulter. From the moment she made her entrance, the dinner guest owned everyone in the room, even Lyra.
Lyra most of all.
Mrs. Coulter spoke of a life of freedom and adventure, while her teasing eyes promised Lyra things the girl had never realized she wanted-affection, attention, someone equal to her.
Beneath the table, Mrs. Coulter’s golden monkey stroked Pantalaimon, holding him almost too close, almost too tight. Lyra saw this, felt it, but she let herself be taken in by Mrs. Coulter’s charms.
Lyra was too young, too innocent to understand that she had been seduced though later, when she found herself trapped in the gilt cage of Mrs. Coulter’s home, Lyra had to admit that she had finally encountered someone who was a better liar than she was.
