Tina clung to her mother's hand, digging into one nostril with scientific precision. Frannie snapped her fingers a couple of times at the immobile red splendour in front of her, by way of experiment. 'Come on, Mac, your shift's over in two minutes, do you think the consulate is gonna get stolen in two minutes?'
For two minutes more, Maggie Mackenzie listened with patient immobility on a discourse on duty, then took Tina by the hand and kissed Frannie quiet.
'I don't know why I married you,' said Francesca, as they walked to the car. 'Must be the uniform.'
'I thought you said it was too "out there".'
'You take the word of a woman who's fallen for every pretty mountie she ever met?'
'Better curb that trend,' said Maggie.
'Curb it for me,' said Frannie with a secret smile as she took the wheel. 'Mom's watching the kids tonight and I just rented a Rocky and Bullwinkle DVD.'
