Bellatrix Lestrange saw the Scarlet Woman in Knockturn Alley on a winter’s night, not so long after her escape from Azkaban.
The woman stood in the blackness of the night, in the falling snow. She wore velvet robes the color of an apple’s skin, or a rose’s heart, of clotted blood, darkest red. Her hair, her lips, her fingernails were the same deep color.
When Bellatrix saw her, she smiled with her own cruel red lips.
She knew the woman well, though it had been many years. They were old lovers, the two of them, old flames. Bellatrix considered the woman in red more her sister than the prim Mrs. Malfoy or the blood-traitor Andromeda Tonks.
It was this woman, even more than Voldemort, that Bellatrix served. The Dark Lord was simply the means by which she reached her Scarlet Woman. If he had died, that Halloween she would found another way to reach out for the red gloved hand of her truest love.
The woman’s name was War.
