Title: Crash Landing
Prompt: #108, earth
Fandom: WNBA (professional sports)
Pairing: Cappie Pondexter/Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury
Wordcount: 100
Rating: PG, I guess.
Diana honestly thought that she was used to it, that the luster of UConn's titles no longer blinded her to the harsh reality of the desert. Yet somehow almost winning was worse than complete misery; one more win was all they had needed to make the picture completely different.
Strange that it was Cappie who brought her back down to earth, reminded her that there was always another game, whispered names that told of a brilliant future into her skin: Jessica, Alison, Candace, Sylvia, Courtney…
But Diana was only soothed when it was her name that came from Cappie's lips.
Title: Locking Horns (Fixed Earth)
Rating: PG, maybe PG-13
Prompt: #108, earth
Wordcount: 100
Fandom: WNBA (professional sports)
Pairing: Lauren Jackson/Sheri Sam, Seattle Storm, WNBA
NB: Set in 2004.
Sheri grits her teeth every time Lauren's apprising gaze takes in another woman, even if she knew from the start that this was Lauren's way. She shoots a fiery amber glare at Lauren every time, but it never has any immediate effect, although Lauren always makes up for it and more, swearing she'll be true forever more.
Stubborn and unrelenting as stone, both of them, Sheri wonders how they remain together. Maybe it's simple lust: need for a warm hard body; a scent heady, earthy, strong, compelling; teeth, tongue, hands.
But if that's all, why should she bother with jealousy?
Title: Fall (Mutable Earth)
Prompt: #108, earth
Wordcount: 100
Fandom: WNBA (professional sports)
Pairing: Swin Cash/Ruth Riley, Detroit Shock and San Antonio Silver Stars respectively (and former Shock, in Riley's case)
With Ruth, Swin was strong, her labors bore fruit easily, the water flowed freely, and she harvested love and was harvested in turn. She looked forward to the beautiful colors of the fall, knowing that she had shelter against the whistling wind.
Without Ruth, Swin's passion has dried up. Cold and barren, nothing she does produces results. All she once thought beauty is now unacceptable flaw. The wind cuts through her body like a long knife, piercing her to the heart; the summer alone is already bitter cold, so the lonely autumn and the forlorn winter can only be worse.
Title: Cracked (Cardinal Earth)
Rating: PG, maybe PG-13
Prompt: #108, earth
Wordcount: 100
Fandom: WNBA (professional sports)
Pairing: Jackie Stiles/Cindy Blodgett, ex-Los Angeles Sparks and ex-Cleveland Rockers
NB: Er, let's just say that the title reflects the nature of the drabble in more ways than one.
Cindy, Jackie had thought, was the distorted reflection of what a dishwater blonde first-round pick from a hometown mid-major could become. Starting for Portland while Cindy moldered on Sacramento's bench, she had laughed, confident she'd never become that. She handled Cindy carelessly that night at the hotel, driving hard until the Maine girl screamed.
But pride goeth before the fall, and Jackie's obsession threw her back down to earth like Phaeton.
Six years later, when Cindy finds Jackie with her pain, Cindy doesn't laugh. She still has the soft touch, and she handles Jackie with infinite care. Still, Jackie screams.
