A Worthy Ruler and a Good Farmer

“I grew up on a farm, just as you did,” Ozma told Dorothy.  “I spent my boyhood in Gillinkin Country where the earth is a dusky violet.  I expected I would become a farmer myself and tend the land.”

“Would you have been happy in such a life?” Dorothy asked.

“I believe I would have been,” Ozma said.  “Except that I was lonely.  Old Mombi was my only company, and she had no fondness for me.  I remember wishing that I might meet a pretty girl and that we might love each other.”

“How differently things turned out!” Dorothy said.   “You turned out to be a girl yourself and the ruler of all of Oz.”

“And yet that little boy I was got all that he hoped for,” Ozma said.  “A worthy ruler and a good farmer have much in common.  Don’t they both cultivate the land they love, taking care to use its resources sparingly and wisely so that it will be fruitful?  And as for my dreams of a sweet farm girl to share my life with, I have you,” Ozma said, squeezing Dorothy’s hand, and smiled warmly.  “In you, I’ve found the companion I dreamed of then.”
