Author’s Note:  True confession, when I was really little (probably 6 or 7) and my mother read Little Women to me I thought of March sisters as couples.   There was Jo/Beth and Meg/Amy.  Apparently I was some kind of a lesbian bad seed  as a child...

Lady Dovecott and Miss Blaine

With the money Jo earned from her stories she took Beth on holiday to the shore hoping the sea air would do her good.  It did seem revitalize her.  For the first time in a long while there was color in Beth’s cheeks and she had the spirit to play along with her sister’s mischief.

For instance, when people at their hotel inquired as to who they were Jo did not reveal their true names.  For the course of the holiday they were not Beth and Jo March of Concord but Lady Dovecott, a wealthy European heiress (prone to fits of giggling) and Miss Blaine, mysterious adventuress who was her constant companion.

They would hold hands in the dining room and sit side by side on the hotel’s wide patio exchanging tender kisses anticipating with delight the gossip they must be stirring up and secretly wishing it were true.
