And any girl will touch your privates for a deuce.

That's what Mama had said. And Velma figured if anyone knew about what girls would do for money, it would be Mama.

There really was no class left in the world. Especially not here in the Cook County Jail. She'd learned that early on. She didn’t expect it here, she certainly wouldn't expect it once she got out.

But Roxie had really crossed the line. There was a difference between no class and down right stealing, and Roxie had stolen from her.

She had stolen everything right down to the rhinestone buckles on her shoes. Roxie had no class.

Velma tried to remind herself of that the next time she saw Roxie, after they were both acquitted. But instead, all she could think about was the feeling of the little bit of money she had left - a deuce - tucked into her bra, and the low ache she felt in her stomach when she saw Roxie.

Later as she pulled her panties up and slipped the money from her bra into Roxie's hand, she found herself thankful that the girl had no class. For once it had worked to her advantage.
