“You gonna hit me Starbuck?”

But I knew that’s what she wanted, a reason to feel hate instead of the fear of her own death. Hate was easy. And I wanted hers, I wanted to harness it, draw it into me and drown in its ignorant confusion. I wanted to take those impudent lips and crush my mouth against them so I could feel her hate and consume it. What was it Lee said? ‘A frak or a fight?’ but I didn’t want one or the other, I needed the obliviating intensity of both.

As the fantasy lost hold I realized it was happening, I had pushed her into the chair behind her, and she was pushing back, forceful mouth and rushed hands. Anything to dull the constant reminder that any day could be our last. It reeked of self-loathing, every touch an avoidance of fear and loss (Anders!) but we fed off our anger and hatred as if there was a nothingness beyond that would absolve us. If we just hurt ourselves enough… For a moment it seemed true. A second of simple absence before the world fell back into place with a bloody lip and an open door.
