A few stray WNBA drabbles

Title: Tupelo Honey
Rating: PG, maybe
Prompt: #100, remainder; #72, sugar
Wordcount: 100
Fandom: WNBA (professional sports)
Pairing: Tangela Smith/Tamika Whitmore, Minnesota Lynx and Indiana Fever respectively
NB: It's cheesy, but it's a thing that must be done. The people are real, but the story is not.

She doesn't need sugar, this girl I've got. Sweeter than honey when she kisses me, soft as marshmallow when I want her, hard and firm as stone when I need her, gentle with her strong hands when she loves me: she's all I could ever want.

Is she pretty? Oh, no. Better than that. She's beautiful, especially when the morning sun hits the edge of her cheek and she smiles.

How anyone could give her up is beyond me, but I'm glad they did, so I could find her.

I'll never let her go. She's mine now.

My Tupelo honey.

Title: 46 Minutes
Rating: PG, maybe
Prompt: #100, remainder; #73, salt
Fandom: WNBA (professional sports)
Wordcount: 100
Pairing: Crystal Robinson/Becky Hammon, New York Liberty
NB: June 13th, 2002: Becky Hammon set the franchise record for minutes played with 46 against Sacramento, while Crystal Robinson played 45. The stats are real. The story is not.

Double overtime, VJ out, and only Sue reliable off the bench: no shower could wash away that much sweat. There's no real difference between forty-five and forty-six, not when Crystal is older and more broken than Becky thinks she'll ever be. Bone-weary, they don't care who's doing what with whom.

After a loss like a dagger, they twine together for comfort, but the sweat is salty, and the salt is bitter. The pain of the loss lingers between them. Crystal won't let on, but she blames herself for the loss: her turnover to Bolton, her traitorous heart elsewhere with Vickie.

Title: Poetic Justice
Rating: G
Fandom: WNBA (professional sports)
Wordcount: 100, como siempre
Prompt: #100, remainder; #97, justice
Pairing: Becky Hammon/Crystal Robinson, New York Liberty and Washington Mystics respectively.
NB: Set after Becky sprained her ankle in the overtime loss to Phoenix.

If justice is poetic, then it's senseless free verse that needs drugs to be comprehensible, or so Crystal thinks when the word comes in after the Merc-Liberty game. Richie doesn't look at her, but he doesn’t have to. He remembers.

Not that she's thrilled, all too aware of the road's end, but sometimes she wonders which of them is better off, the one who stars for a basement team or the one who plays a supporting role on a playoff contender.

But even after she left Becky (before Becky could leave her), she would never have wished this on her.

Title: Draft Watching
Prompt: #100, remainder; #92, hope
Rating: G
Fandom: WNBA (professional sportsslash)
Wordcount: 100
Pairing: Diana Taurasi/Ann Strother
Don't own them. Don't know them.

She watches the draft board like a hawk, knowng that what she wants doesn't make any sense, and knowing that the illogic is what draws her. The top four are chosen the way everyone knew they would be; she texts Cappie to open up the line of communication that they'll need this summer.

BT goes to Seattle. Sue will love that.

Ann's name isn't called until the draft switches over to NBA-TV, but it's the first one called there, and Diana's mouth tastes of ashes, no matter how much Houston needs a shooting guard and Phoenix doesn't need another one.

Title: Rumors Over The Air
Prompt: #100, remainder; #91, prudence
Rating: PG
Fandom: WNBA (professional sportsslash)
Pairing: Iciss Tillis/Barbara Farris, New York Liberty
Wordcount: 100
Don't own them. Don't know them. The rumor can be found here. Don't know if it's true or not.

Iciss picked up the phone the second she recognized the number. "Heya."

"Hear tell on the Internet you got into a bar fight back home."

"Just like you to cut to the chase, ain't it?"

"You gonna tell me if the rumor's true?"

"Don't see how it's your concern. I don't need a babysitter."

Rueful laughter. "Sugar, you're a damn fool if you got into a fight by yourself. 'Tain't prudent."

"If I got into a fight, which I don't recall confirming, I could handle myself. I *am* my father's daughter."

"But that's what you have me for," Barbara laughed.

Title: Santa's Secret
Prompt: #100, remainder; #96, gift
Rating: PG
Fandom: WNBA (professional sports)
Pairing: Sue Bird/Diana Taurasi, Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury respectively
Wordcount: 100
NB: Of course, the day after the gift challenge closes, I get a bunny. DEATH. I would like to establish, for the slow among us, that I don't own and don't know these people.

Sue stared at the object in Diana's hands, eyebrow raised in confusion. "D, what on earth is that thing?" she asked.

"S'posed to be a bun warmer," Diana replied, sounding equally confused. "It was in the stocking when I woke up. I thought you got it for me, but since you didn't recognize it, I'm guessin' not."

"Right." Sue shook her head. "A bun warmer. I think you need to make some public appearances in a ponytail."

"Maybe a Mohawk. I was thinkin' 'bout a new 'do…"

Long pause.

"Suzie? I don't think it's s'posed to warm those buns either."
