Something Better Came Along
"He is already favoring you."
Brows furrowed, Sara asks absently, "Who is?"
"Grissom."
"Grissom isn't favoring me."
"You order me around at crime scenes. You're in on the miniature murder scenes. And don't tell me that's not because you're sleeping with him."
Forcing a smile, Sara shakes her head. "I'm not sleeping with Grissom, Catherine," and she is surprised just how much the truth sounds like a lie, even to her own ears. She tells herself to worry about it, but then again, this shouldn't be anybody's business but her own.
Sarcastically, Catherine snorts. "Right. Of course you aren't sleeping with Grissom."
"I'm not…" Sara's sigh sounds defeated when really, she is only tired of this all. "Maybe you're just jealous."
For a moment, Catherine simply stares at her, expression eventually softening. Without a sound, she turns around. "Maybe I am," she mutters wistfully before the door closes behind her.

Sara stared at the door blankly, not believing the words she heard slip softly from Catherine's lips. When the door clicked shut, it snapped her out of her reverie and she rushed out into the hall. Sara knew pursuing this was probably not the smartest decision she had ever made, but she couldn't ignore the feeling in her gut that simply said "Go."
"What did you say?" Sara asked, grasping Catherine's arm to prevent her walking away.
"Nothing." Catherine turned to face Sara defensively. "I didn't say anything."
"I heard you say something Catherine, please, what was it?"
Catherine's eyes softened as Sara spoke her name. She sighed, hung her head and ran her free hand through her hair as she looked back up. The silence hung between them for another moment, heavy with expectation, until she looked into Sara's eyes.
"Maybe I am," she whispered.
Sara realized she was still holding Catherine's arm, that she didn't want to let it go and that Catherine had indeed said what she thought she said.
"Maybe I am," she said again, tucking a stray hair behind Sara's ear and brushing her cheek with her hand. Sara released her arm and pressed her hand to the spot Catherine just touched, butterflies bursting forth from her stomach. Catherine smiled and continued down the hall leaving Sara to stand alone.
