Laurie opened the door to reveal CJ on the other side. “CJ what -”

CJ cut her off. “You’ve gotta stay away from Sam.”

“Why?”

“Because nothing stays secret in this town, and the last thing we need right now is it coming out that the Deputy Communications Director slept with a call girl.”

“What about it coming out that the Press Secretary slept with a call girl?”

“Laurie!”

“Oh, was that supposed to be a secret? But then, there are no secrets in this town, right?” She slammed the door on CJ.

CJ could only stare at the door.

They thought it was a punishment, locking her up in this prison for years. They thought they had found the perfect way to get to her. To punish her for loving the way she loved. But they’d made a mistake. They’d put Charlotte with her.

Charlotte, who understood her better than anyone. Charlotte, who had stood by her through everything. And Charlotte who would never leave her. Never. Because Charlotte loved her, loved her the way she’d always loved others. Completely. Devotedly. Obsessively.

They said she was crazy, that Charlotte didn’t exist. But they were wrong. Charlotte existed. Charlotte was perfect. And Charlotte would never, ever leave.

They weren’t punishing her. They were rewarding her.

The first time Idina met Kristin, she forgot her name.

She knew of the blonde, of course. She had seen pictures, had even seen her perform. But actually meeting her, looking into her blue eyes, knocked her completely off balance.

She turned automatically at the touch on her shoulder. “Hi, I’m Kristin Chenoweth.”

The blonde was overtly perky for so early. Idina told herself that that was what had shocked her into speechlessness. “Oh, I’m - um - ”

“Idina Menzel.” The blonde supplied, grinning.

“Yeah.”

“Nice to meet you.”

“You too.” She blushed. Kristin smiled and Idina forgot her embarrassment.

It was her last scheduled performance and she was in pain. She had figured on pain, but more emotional pain, instead of the actual physical pain she was in. They had given her medication at the hospital after the fall, but she hadn’t taken it tonight, wanting to be fully aware of this last moment on the show.

It hurt when she walked, the pain was almost to the point of excruciating as she said her lines. Then she heard Jennifer shout “Fellow Ozians… I love Idina Menzel!” And she forgot all about the pain, warmth and love replacing it.

When she kissed Tracie for the first time during filming, she threw herself into it completely. She let Idina go and embraced Maureen and kissed Tracie with everything she had. And of course Tracie kissed her back. She was playing a part.

She was only playing a part. But for a few seconds while her lips were against Tracie’s, sliding and creating the perfect friction, she forgot that they were only acting. She forgot that everyone was watching, including her own husband. And she forgot all about Wicked and Kristin.

For a few seconds, she was free of the memories.

She wanted to make Rosario feel welcome in the little family that had become the original cast of Rent. She was sure that Tracie felt comfortable, at least with her, and she wanted Rosario to feel at ease too.

When she showed up at Rosario’s apartment, the brunette looked surprised, but pleased. Less than an hour later, she was being pushed against the wall as Rosario’s fingernails ripped at her clothing. Afterwards Idina quickly gathered her things and left.

The next morning, Rosario cornered her in her trailer, holding up a pair of lacy black panties. “Forget something?” she smirked.

Salma never spoke in English when they were alone together. She hardly spoke at all, opting for moans instead, but when they collapsed on to the bed, their clothes strewn across the floor, broken Spanish would tumble from her tongue and fall across Idina’s skin.

Idina tried to catch some of the words, to memorize them so she could translate them later, but the haze of passion would always fog her brain.

And when she would wake up in the morning Selma and all traces of her would be gone, and the words would be forgotten. Until the next night.
