She was going to Shiz because she was smart, Galinda reminded herself as the endless countryside rushed past. Because she was genuinely intelligent, and had earned herself a place on her own merits.

Not because her mother believed wholeheartedly in the sweeping of problems beneath rugs.

Of course her parents had both feigned enormous surprise, but it had seemed to Galinda rather coincidental that her letter of acceptance had arrived the day after she had been caught ‘behaving improperly’ with the gardener’s daughter.

The scandal her parents had predicted if word of this got out made still Galinda seethe. She had merely been adjusting the other girl’s garter, which had snagged on her stocking. Loti obviously couldn’t do it herself, or she would have smeared the polish that Galinda had just finished painting on her nails.

And then, coincidentally, the letter regarding her fellowship had arrived and before the week was out, Galinda was being packed off to Shiz, out of gossip’s way. As a smattering of rain began to fling itself at the windows, Galinda extracted the envelope from her hip pocket, checking the date that she knew by heart.

Three full weeks before it had ‘arrived’. Coincidence indeed.
