Of all the things one could lie about, Spencer Carlin figured the least shameful was love. At night, she had gone through dozens of At Leasts, from mortal sins to the absurd, in order to make herself feel better: At least I haven’t killed anyone. At least I don’t hurt puppies or babies. At least I don’t covet my neighbor’s wife...yet, God help me.
So when the words to her family that morning (My cell phone just..died) didn’t exactly conform to the previous night’s reality (the kissing, the touching, Ashley, all of it, every glorious, beautiful minute of it), she couldn’t help but smile. Not because she lied, but because she was in love.
At least that much was true.
