Of course it was the same bed. The same inn, the same room, and the same bed - and she doubted that anyone had bothered to launder the sheets since they had been there last.

Normally, this would have disgusted Glinda. Instead, she rolled over, breathing in the mustiness of the pillows, desperately seeking even the slightest hint of Elphaba.

Here, they had lain together, pretending with eyes closed that they were in the grandest bed, in the largest suite, in the swankiest hotel: and that they were only packed in like sardines because they wanted to be. In reality, they could have moved apart at any time, luxuriating on the enormous mattress with room enough for a third person between them.

“But it’s much more pleasant this way, don’t you think?” Elphaba had murmured, as her hands had slid over Glinda’s stomach, slowly removing her nightgown. “Really, we could have saved money and taken a smaller room. We don’t need all this space.”

Glinda stretched out with a choked sob, her knuckles brushing the wall. This was reality - the cramped shoebox, and the fact that Elphie, for all her words, hadn’t meant one whit of what she’d said.
