challenge 84: ring, BSG/SG-1, Sam Carter/Kara Thrace
Title: Keepsake

Set: insert to Kobol's Last Gleaming.
Rating: er... 13. There is kissing.
Length: 250 words.
"Hey. Sam."
Sam's half-awake before Kara speaks, but she still tries to act lazy as she opens one eye. "What?"
And then Kara was kissing her, and Sam was distracted, trying to remember when they'd last talked (sometime after Kara's run with Apollo, but before the raptors headed to Kobol). She knows what they talked about (Baltar, but he didn't happen), and that they parted without settling a damned thing.
The kiss ends abruptly, and Kara runs a finger over Sam's cheek. "Apollo says you're needed on the flight deck."
"Ok." That doesn't explain a damned thing. Sam sits up and reaches out to take the hand Kara extends. Something metallic drops into her palm. "What is--?"
But she knows. Even as Kara is heading for the hatch--she stops, one hand on the wall, "Keep it safe, Sam."
Now she's definitely awake. Standing up and starting after her, Sam calls, "Kara, wait!"
"Gotta go!"
Indeed, the lieutenant is down the corridor and gone before Sam can make it to the door.
She stands there, clutching the ring Kara habitually wears around her thumb. The one she never takes off, and has joked on more than one occasion about being buried with. Zak's ring. Fingers shaking, Sam reaches up and yanks open the clasp to her tags, threading the chain through the ring before closing it. Then she starts looking for her flight suit. Something's up. She has no idea what, but she'll be damned if she sleeps through it.
