“What is it?” Ruby asks, awakening to find Dorothy already putting out their campfire and gathering their things.
“A once in a lifetime opportunity!”
She looks around them but sees nothing to be causing such a stir. “What is it?”
“Look up.”
Ruby shrugs. “A beautiful, blue sky. I guess it’s a lovely day if you want to get moving. I’d thought we could linger a little while. I certainly didn’t expect to wake up without you in my arms or at least your arms around me!”
“I’m sorry, but, Red, you’re missing the chance! You didn’t see the rainbow!”
“The rainbow? What does a rainbow have to do with anything?” Her face falls suddenly. “You think it can carry you home?”
“No!” She knows she should feel guilty for not wanting to get immediately back to Auntie Em and Uncle Henry, but ever since meeting Ruby, that feels ever less urgent. “But the rainbow! The gold at the end of the rainbow!”
Ruby throws her head back and laughs.
“What?”
“Oh, dear! There’s no gold at the end of the rainbow!”
“What? Not even here?”
She sounds so disappointed that Ruby almost hurts for her. Almost, but she’s glad they don’t have to move so swiftly from this spot. “Come here.” She pulls her down into her lap, causing her to drop and scatter their belongings. She nuzzles her, and amongst kisses in her ears and hair, she tells her, “You’re the only gold I’m ever going to need.”
