“Blanche!” Dorothy cries, her hands shaking as she clutches a paper in front of her. “Wh-What is this?!”
“Mah assignment,” Blanche responds matter-of-factly.
“I asked you to write about doing a favor for somebody! I can’t turn this into the Dean!”
“O’ course you can! He’s one o’ mine. Besides, it’s what you asked for. Ah was doin’ Tony a favor.”
Dorothy stares at her, aghast. “You went to bed with a man as a favor?!”
“O’ course!”
“Blanche, this . . . “ Dorothy waves the paper in the humid, Miami air. “This is something straight out of a Harlequin novel!”
“Thanks, Dorothy!” Blanche smiles brightly. “Many folks have said that mah life should be a romance novel, but you’re th’ first one to say Ah can write that well!”
Dorothy’s eyes narrow. “That wasn’t a compliment!”
“Sure it was, shugah.” Blanche pats her cheek. “You just don’t know it yet, an’ while we’re talkin’ about mah grade, maybe Ah can do you a similar favor?”
Dorothy’s face turns as red as Blanche’s blouse. “I am not that kind of woman!”
Sure you are, Dorothy, Blanche thinks again. You just don’t know it yet. But one of these days, she would, and Blanche would have her right where she wants her, underneath her, gasping in pleasure and joy and maybe even love.
