She waits until they’re alone. “So . . . Kurt told me you two finally talked about the kiss you shared back in our Excalibur days.” Rachel winces and looks away from Kitty’s imploring eyes. “So what happened to your not having memories of that time? To you being a different Rachel from the one I loved, who I thought loved me? It--It broke my heart to lose you, Ray. I thought you felt the same.”
There are tears in Kitty’s eyes now. Rachel can’t face them; she can’t face her. All this time, she’s let her think she was another Rachel. She never actually said the words, just acted like she had no idea of the love they once shared. It wasn’t really a miscommunication. It was a lie, and Rachel tucks her head now with sorrow. “Kitty . . . I . . . I don’t know what to say.”
“I know what to say. You should’ve told me the truth, Ray. We used to be able to tell each other everything, anything! I would have understood! But this?” She shakes her head as she backs away from her. “You acted like you didn’t know me from before, but I really don’t know you now!”
She turns and slips away from her. Rachel reaches out a hand to stop her, but then she pulls it back. She has no right. She was too afraid to lose her again. That fear had kept her from telling the truth, but now she’s lost her forever. She doubles over, crying.
