She stares across of the bright, orange flames of the bonfire at her heroine. She knows she’s staring too much at her, and it’s not because she’s sharpening her sword and Gabrielle’s wondering a thousand things about that blade. Tonight, she’s simply watching the most beautiful woman she’s ever met.
She wonders when she first noticed how beautiful she was. She can’t remember. She remembers thinking how amazing and strong she was the first time she saw her, but her beauty never occurred to her at the time. That moment was months ago now and almost feels like another lifetime.
She wonders about Xena’s prior life. She knows she was “evil” at one time. She knows she blames herself for thousands of deaths. But how did she survive everything she’s endured and still come away looking so amazingly beautiful? Gabrielle’s breath catches in her throat just watching her; yet when Xena’s eyes flick up to meet hers through the flames, she sees something else entirely.
She never smiles, never truly smiles, not even when she manages to make her laugh. “Hey, have I told you the one -- “
“Not tonight,” Xena says, the two, calm, softly spoken words cutting the bard short. She stands and walks away. Gabrielle watches her go, her mouth still open. Slowly, she shuts her mouth, but that night she makes a promise to them both. Xena’s beautiful, and one day, she’s going to help her see it. One day, she’s going to make her truly smile.
