"Done?" Rachel asks, sticking her head into the Headmistress' office.
"Yes," Kitty answers, laying her pen down. With a little smile, she adds, "and this is the first time since we've moved in that the books have been balanced."
"You did it!" Rachel beams. "I always knew you would."
Kitty glances away. "It hasn't been easy."
"This from the girl who used to tell me how many times that nothing worthwhile ever is?"
"I know, but sometimes, just once, maybe, I'd like it to be."
"I know something that's easy and worthwhile," Rachel teases lightly, sliding behind Kitty's desk.
Kitty pushes her chair back and looks up at her. "What's that?"
"Loving you." Cupping her face in her hands, Rachel kisses her lips deeply and sweetly. It's been a long, hard day for them both, and Kitty sighs with relief and joy into the kiss they share.
When they part, Kitty whispers, looking up into Rachel's eyes, "You know, when we were together the first time, I used to wonder if I'd ever be as cool as you, if I'd ever be worthy of you . . . "
"And now?" Rachel prompts. She used to pick up on those thoughts, always unintentionally, but this is the first time they've discussed that feeling.
"I think, maybe, finally, I've made it," Kitty answers and kisses her again. This time, she doesn't let go. As Rachel lowers herself into her lap, she knows Kitty's mistaken: She's the one, after all, who will never be worthy of her.
