"They're looking this way," Trini whispers, setting her tray down.
"So?" Kim shrugs, taking the seat across from hers, and bites into an apple. "Let them look."
"Are you sure you want to be seen with me?" Trini asks anxiously, slowly sitting.
"I should be the one asking you that. I'm the meanest girl in Angel Grove, after all."
"No way!"
Kim nods. She isn't going to tell her why -- Jason, their leader, is the only one she's ever shared the true story of her fall from grace with --, but she knows it's true. Before meeting Trini and the other Rangers, she never cared about anybody at this school. She still doesn't care about the other students, but there are four people her own age for whom she now cares deeply. "Way," she insists simply, taking another bite. "If you don't want to be seen with me, I get it."
"Kimberly, you're not the freak here!"
"Heh." Kim snorts. "That's what you think."
"Kim -- "
"Look, Trini, I know my own shortcomings. I know why they stare at me every day. I know why they hate me, and if you stick with me, they'll hate you too."
Trini reaches across the table and takes Kim's hand in hers, calming her anger. "Then let them hate," she says simply, gazing into Kim's beautiful eyes and not caring what the rest of the world thinks. Kim almost chokes on her apple, but she doesn't take her eyes from Trini's for the rest of their break.
