"You know, eating pizza with him wouldn't kill you."
Kitty lays her pen on her desk and slowly looks up at the redhead sticking her head through her office door. "No, it wouldn't. But it would lead to other things, and other ideas, I'd really rather not revisit."
"He might surprise you," Rachel offers, inching into the room. "Maybe you could be happy this time."
Kitty's bark of laughter is sudden and rough. There's no joy or humor to be found in it, but both are of short, almost non-existent, supply these days.
"What? You could be."
"I don't see that happening, not with him any way."
"Kitty, you have to take a chance sometime -- "
"Maybe -- " Kitty stops at the look and telepathic brush Rachel gives her. Her head drops, and she sighs. "Okay. Yes. I have to take a chance some time. Some day. Again." Kitty's brown eyes slowly raise back to Rachel's green ones. "But of all the relationships I might want to revisit, Piotr is nowhere on my list."
Rachel was about to sit. Now she freezes with her hands on the chair and stares back across the office at Kitty. Her heart skips a beat -- cliche, but true. She hadn't thought Kitty had thought there was anything left but friendship between them. "Who do you want to . . . revisit?" she asks, almost breathlessly.
"You."
Rachel beams in answer. She knows she wasn't Kitty's first love, or even her second, but maybe there's hope for them after all!
