Admiral Cain watched the President with barely hidden contempt. She’d just been witness to the interaction between Adama and Roslin and had found the negotiating and debating deeply disturbing although she couldn’t put her finger on why. And that made her angry.
But there was something about this fleet, this President, that was making her review her previous actions and she was damned if she was going to let Roslin neuter her the way she had Adama, turn her into another guardian to her lost graveyard of ships.
Frak it, the woman was a former school teacher, what did she know about making tough decisions, having people live or die because of them? She might have persuaded Adama and the Galactica to follow her, he was after all renowned for having a chivalrous streak, but she would find Cain and the Pegasus a far more difficult prospect. She and her crew were tempered by hardship and battle.
Cain moved toward the President, she was frail, maybe ill, using the table to hold herself up. Conflict between the Galactic and the Pegasus was inevitable and for the moment she needed the civilians out of the way. As she met the grey, or were they green, eyes she had an unexpected moment of doubt, seeing in them the knowledge of her deeds and sins and a promise to stop her no matter the cost. Herself reflected back at her. Cold, implacable, morally ambiguous, fully prepared to pay the price for her actions.
