It's late at night as they stare together across the river they'll cross in the next day's light. "Sometimes," Red says, her voice breaking through the quiet sounding almost like a desperate plea, and in a way, it is, "I wonder if I'll ever find her, if she exists even."
"Her?" Mulan asks in surprise, looking up from sharpening her sword.
"Her." Her dark eyes flick to the warrioress, awaiting rejection.
Instead, Mulan places her sword to the side. She looks beyond them to the sleeping Aurora before looking back up at Red. "I . . . just did not know, but there is nothing wrong with that. Why do you doubt you will find her?"
"Because," Red answers with a sigh, casting her gaze back out over the water, "I fear I already knew her, loved her, and lost her."
"There was another?"
"Yes. My dearest friend. For a long time, my only friend. But her heart was never truly mine. She loves a Prince."
"Perhaps you could change -- "
"She's already married with children."
"Oh." Again, Mulan looks back to Aurora. "I think, in that case, there must be another. Soul mates are two halves of one whole. A half cannot truly love another unless it is her missing piece, so this Prince must be your friend's other half, which means the hunt should continue until you find your missing half."
"I hope you're right."
Mulan leans back against a tree, still watching Aurora sleep. Silence once more settles over them as she, too, hopes she's right.
