Sometimes she likes to imagine that they're together again. She likes to let herself think the Virus never claimed the woman she loves, that Irene's still alive and well and fighting beside her. She likes to imagine she never left her. On those nights, she imbibes a little too much and always wakes up on Irene's grave, still hearing her shouts ring.
"YOU HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING! FOR THEM! FOR US! FOR ONES LIKE US! YOU CAN'T GIVE UP! When the time comes," she used to add more softly, "you'll come to me. Your soul will find mine. We're meant to be together, but until that happens, until your time comes, you've got to keep fighting! PROMISE ME, RAVEN! PROMISE ME!"
Raven remembers, with soaking wet eyes, that she'd made that promise. She'd made that promise so her love could have peace, but now peace is the furthest thing from Raven. Yet, every morning when she comes to on her lover's grave after a night like last night, she remembers. She remembers her promise, and she reaches for her gun.
Maybe today will be the day, she thinks, her hope rising with the dawn. Maybe one of these new kids will be faster than she. Maybe a human will get lucky. Maybe she'll get lucky and be able to be with the woman she loves. Her gun in hand, her promise clear in her mind, and her heart still and forever holding to Irene, Mystique dodges back into the fight.
