They think she's fearless, but they couldn't be more wrong. Fear touches her heart daily. Just a few days ago, she faced all her greatest fears: of being helpless, of losing when it mattered most, and most especially of losing those she loves. Xena's trying to shut the memories out of her mind as she listens to Argo quietly chewing on the sweet grass she found him, but they won't be so easily subdued tonight.
As she lays awake underneath the stars, trying to match her heartbeat to Gabrielle's slower rhythm to lull herself to sleep, Xena realizes her lover is also still awake. She turns her head to gaze down into Gabrielle's beautiful face. "Gabby?" When the bard doesn't respond, she adds, "You can stop faking."
At that, Gabby's green eyes pop open. "How did you know?"
Xena shrugs. "I know you," she answers dismissively, a twinkle in her eyes. Gabrielle doesn't need to know the thoughts that weigh so heavily on her mind.
"Uh uh," Gabby says, not believing her for an instant, but then, to Xena's surprise, she seems to let it go. "Promise me one thing."
"What?" Xena threads her fingers through her love's long, blonde hair.
"That you'll always be here for me, with me, no matter what."
Xena's smile softens. "I promise as long as you promise me the same."
"It's a deal." Gabby leans up and kisses her before settling back into her embrace. Xena shuts her eyes; this time, she's falls asleep.
