Gill opened the door of her car and reached in for her cardigan and froze. Janet’s blood was still drying on the upholstery. Gill closed her eyes and remembered Janet, Rachel holding her in her arms and that blank, hollow look.
Gill still didn’t have time to break down. She’ll do that later, in the privacy of her own home, when she didn’t need to be strong for Rachel and Janet.
Gill reached out and touched the blood.
“Boss?” Rachel called from the hospital entrance. “Janet’s out of theatre.”
“Thanks.” Gill looked up and wiped at her eyes. “I’m coming.”

Janet opened the door to the spare room. “Ade and I just got into it and he went to bed and I really… I don’t want to…”
“And you gave away your guestroom.” Rachel smiled, picking up a pillow. “I can sleep downstairs.”
“We can share.” Janet climbed onto the bed with Rachel. Rachel wrapped her arms around Janet and pulled her close. Janet spooned up, sighing contentedly.
“Like a sleepover.” Rachel smiled.
Janet smiled back. “Like a sleepover.”
As Rachel’s arms tightened around her waist, Janet actually felt hopeful for the first time in a long time.
