Summary: Well that turned out angsty...
Clarke ran as fast as she could, as far as she could from the burning remnants of Tondc, and its ashes falling like snow. They had let an entire village be destroyed by the Mountain Men. Lexa had taken the decision, but Clarke hadn’t warned anyone. Guilt bubbled like acid in her stomach.
Branches whipped and scratched her face as she darted through the dark forest, but she didn't slow down. She knew Lexa was following close behind and she wanted as much space as possible between her and the Commander.
"Stop tracking me, Lexa!"
"Not Lexa." The voice was calm, cold.
Clarke skidded to a halt and whirled around, chest heaving.
‘Octavia.’
"I'm sorry for what I said to you back there, I should have trusted you," Octavia said with her signature shrug.
‘She came back for you.’
Clarke wanted to laugh, to cry. Octavia was apologizing to her when really it should be the other way around.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
"I tried, I...” Clarke attempted to justify her actions. “Oh god, what have I done, O?" she whispered horrified, tears blurring her vision. She raked her fingers through her hair, pulling harshly at it. "I killed...I…" She dropped to her knees, unable to catch her breath.
Was this how life would always be on Earth? Survive, not live. Didn’t they deserve better than this?
Octavia rubbed her back soothingly, words failing her. What was there left to say?
"Breathe, Clarke, breathe. I'm here, okay? I love you."
