April came to Maureen, holding the damning piece of paper. “AIDS.”
Maureen held her. “It’s gonna be okay.”
April pushed Maureen away. “No, it isn’t. I’m going to die!”
“Don’t say that. Don’t give in. You can fight this.”
“No I can’t. I’m not like you, Maureen. I’ve got no fight left.”
“Then you come to me, and I’ll fight for you.”
April just turned and left. They found her in the bathtub a few hours later.
Maureen cried alone, not because her lover killed herself, but because she’d chosen to surrender to death rather than surrender to her help.

She thought she knew things after escaping the stomach of the Wolf.
Then she felt like she didn’t know anything. Her mother and grandmother were dead and she was alone. She was ready to surrender to the giant and die.
Then Cinderella was hugging her close, wiping her tears away, telling her she was not alone. And she began to feel things that she had never felt before.
Now she wanted to fight the giant, she wanted to live. She wanted to stay with Cinderella and keep this feeling forever.
Because she knew things now that she hadn’t known before.
