It isn’t your job to tell her father about this, just like it’s not your job to keep her relationship with Charlie going smooth. In a broad sense, it’s hardly any of your business if she drinks. Or maybe you’re just bad at your job.
“Didn’t you ever lie, cheat and steal to get alcohol when you were under twenty-one?”
You look into Zoey’s eyes.
“No.”
“Liar,” she laughs.
You take a breath and glance around the bar. Hard to tell if the coast is clear, but on the plus side, you’re the one all the guys are gawking at.
“Are we almost done here?”
“No, I want…something with vodka.”
“I’m not buying it for you.”
Zoey rolls her eyes, and one of her friends from college comes round with the drinks.
“Are cute bodyguards allowed to drink, Gina?”
You don’t bother answering that. She shoots you a defiant look, as if she’s daring you. Reminding you you’re not some fifty-something balding man guarding her safety. You’re twenty-seven. You’re twenty-seven and she’s nineteen, with her hand suddenly around your waist. She hands you a drink, takes one for herself.
"A couple of blocks away - you're coming to a party."
