Maladict watches as Polly lifts the spoon carefully.
It's full of sugar - pink sugar, made from beet juice. Mal realizes, it's the only coloured thing in the picture.
Polly is dressed in black - black velvet, no less, over layers of black silk, black lace - and her white hair is swept up with silver combs set with obsidian and jet. Her skin is etched with white scars. This late in winter, they hardly show up against her skin.
Polly stirs the sugar into milk-whitened tea, and looks up and, catching Mal watching, she blushes pink as sugar, and just as sweet.

Catherine used to be a stripper. She was good at what she did.
She still remembers how to make a man's jaw drop with a glance, how to make the guys in Perverts' Row crane their necks by undoing her blouse one button at a time. She could turn a man on with a smile.
But a woman?
She watches Sara absently tear open a sugar packet with her teeth, suck the coffee through the hollow stir-stick, as she types away at her computer.
She watches and closes her mouth.
She never thought anyone would have that effect on her.
