In a dream, there was no boundary that separated Ariadne from Mal when she suddenly appeared, menacing, staring coldly at her, a knife in her hand.
Mal was not there as part of Ariadne's subconscious, or a memory of an actual person. But, as a memory from someone else's dream: Cobb's.
A projection of someone who is dead, a reflection of a broken and lost soul, trapped in a make-believe world when she had been alive with a pulse (a pulse that beat against the cold blade of a knife).
Mal walks toward Ariadne quickly, the knife catching the sunlight--
