Misty pedaled harder, her calves on fire, the rush of air making her eyes water. She caught a brief scent of citrus as she passed a fruit stand. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, the noise seeming to echo in ears.
All of which she enjoyed during an afternoon bike ride.
She looked behind her, and saw that Officer Jenny was riding her own bicycle, not far behind her. Not that she'd expected anything less from her. After all, that woman frequently chased after criminals on it.
Misty suddenly braked, waiting for Officer Jenny to catch up.
When the policewoman did, she smiled cheerfully at Misty.
Misty asks, perhaps a bit too casually, considering who she was talking to, when her shift ended.
The smile on Officer Jenny's face does not change, but the look in her eyes darkens a bit, making Misty wonder if she'd been planning on asking her the same question.
