Sebastian and Viola were twins. Olivia understood that. But she didn’t understand how she ever mistook them.

They smelt different, for one. In Science, Viola smelt vaguely of soccer sweat and rosemary shampoo. Sebastian spelt like Lynx, like boy. And while his lyrics were passionate, they were nothing to the way Viola raced around the school and soccer pitch, pulling faces, flirting with Duke, putting on manly voices until everyone collapsed in hysterics.

Olivia thought Viola was amazing, something she tried to forget while walking home. It was late, her car broken, and the mall a long way from home. Distracted, she didn’t notice the man behind her. When he grabbed her arm, she screamed.

“Hey Olivia! It’s me, Sebastian.”

Olivia took a deep breath, quickly realising her boyfriend smelt like girl. She lifted a hand to his check. It was smooth. She’d seen Sebastian this morning, during Spanish, and he hadn’t shaved.

Viola flinched, just slightly, away from her touch.

“So Olivia, you know I like you, but.” Viola nodded at her. She’d obviously practiced this. “Let’s be friends, okay.”

Olivia leaned forward and kissed her, fierce and deliberate. One hand grasped Viola’s wig and pulled hard. The other held her tight, clinging onto her shoulder. She could smell Viola’s rosemary shampoo, her fruity lip balm and orange-scented skin.

“A hint, okay,” Olivia said, imitating Viola’s jerky speech. “Sebastian smells like boy, not tangerine moisturizer.”

But Olivia turned away with a smile, and Viola flushed, fingering her lips absently.
