Regina turned the page of her newspaper and took a sip of her coffee. She had a smile on her face. As always she was immaculately dressed. It was a beautiful morning.
Regina took out her phone and sent a single letter text. She put the phone down on the counter, there wasn't going to be a reply.
"Morning Mayor," Doctor Whale said as he entered Grannies.
"Morning," she nodded. She watched him get settled in his usual breakfast booth.
She read her paper for a few minutes, then picked up the phone again and sent another text message. Another single letter.
Regina repeated the process until she'd finished the paper and two cups of coffee. Sitting at the counter she called the same number she had been texting. She didn't put the cellphone to her ear, the call wasn't going to be picked up.
On the walk home Regina called the number a few more times.
