There’s hatred in Kali’s eyes. Hatred and frustration and anger, and Jennifer wants to claw at her, rip those emotions away, hold them up in front of Kali’s face and tell her she doesn’t have the right to call them her own.
She remembers lying in Kali’s bed, not as Jennifer but as Julia. She remembers Kali’s lips pressed against her temple, the safety she’d felt in Kali’s arms. She remembers the way that Kali would look at her, the love in her expression, the devotion and the affection and the warmth.
She remembers lying on the ground, dirt and blood in her throat, the pack dead all around her. Jennifer remembers Kali looking down at the wreck of her face, eyes red as flames but they’d never been so cold. Turning, walking away, leaving Jennifer to bleed out, choking on her pain.
Kali thinks she knows anger. She doesn’t even know the meaning of the word.
But Jennifer will show them, she’ll show them all. Drinking in that hatred like a fine wine, and when she looks down on Kali’s corpse, it will be with that same coldness Kali extended to her.
There’ll be no memories of the warmth before it. That version of Kali is as dead as the one standing before her will soon be, and Jennifer won’t mourn the woman twice.
