There’s nothing new about re-writing your history. The only thing new about this is that you actually care.
But after spending so much time lying (all those things you’d done without stopping to breathe), the ugly truth of it clogs your veins until you have to remind yourself to swallow and blink and sleep. Lilah’s small lie barely hurts the balance.
She crosses her legs and sits.
“I’m not here.”
The prison guard averts his eyes when she kisses you. You smile, wryly.
“Let me guess - you didn’t do that?”
“I can get you off,” she says, always the professional.
“Yeah?” you lean back in your chair, eyeing her up and down. “Oh, I bet you could.”
“Don’t be an idiot, Faith. I know how long your sentence is.”
You laugh, because you don’t seem to know how to talk anymore, without treating it like some game. “And what do your big bad lawyer bosses think of your jail-breaking plans?”
She shakes her head, but doesn’t give anything away.
“You’re a stupid child.”
“No. I’m a murderer,” you snap. “Don’t you want to keep the streets safe, princess?”
There are only so many surprises a person in your state can handle, and you know you’ll never really be free.
You let Lilah’s new off-the-record visits continue, because you’re sure it'll get old soon.
