The gay kids have to go and seek out other books, special gay books. I had to read that line twice, and then I got it, and it's a little sad, from that perspective, but in a good, learning way (at least in my brain). And the voice in the piece is so Mac, and you're justifying the online existence and you're justifying Buffy as the origin of all things, but it's not meta, which is genius. It's just Mac as a real person, and not as an ironic reflection of pop culture. Without being a Mary Sue, because it's her voice. And wow. I didn't think I had anything to say about this story.
It's so about me, but it has nothing to do with me at all.
Right now you're not curious about girls in general, about how to define your sexuality, about what label you'll pick. You want to know what happens next. What the rest is like.
Awesome.
Until this, I didn't even like Mac. Which, apparently, was crazy of me.
oh my. Beginning with the (apt) Willow comparison, and ending with She wants to know too, this fic is so satisfying. Even more so, because you just have Mac's voice. She feels real - the way she sees herself, in relation to Kylie - not gay in the right way, even. She's so tentative about everything, even her crush on Veronica. And it's wonderful to read.
