Summary: Set after the Hueco Mundo Arc. Ichigo needs a peptalk from Renji, and Rukia overhears.

“Dammit, Renji! Do you have to smoke those things in here,” Ichigo asked tersely as he waved the smoke away from his face.

“It’s my house. I can smoke in here if I want to.”

The two men were sitting in Renji’s living room. Renji was sprawled out on the couch, ashtray resting on his lean stomach; and Ichigo was sitting on the chair opposite him.

The orange-haired Shinigami leaned forward resting his elbows on his knees, his head hanging in defeat.

“So remind me why you’re here again,” Renji drawled.

“No reason,” Ichigo answered looking up. “Just felt like stopping by.”

“Yeah well, it’s great to see you and everything guy, but you kinda interrupted my Valentine’s day celebration with Rukia.”

Ichigo had the good sense to cringe. “Sorry about that. Where is she anyways?”

“Back in the bedroom. She felt your troubled Reiatsu coming a mile away. So do you wanna tell me the real reason you’re here,” Renji said as he expelled another stream of smoke.

Shaking his head Ichigo answered, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Sure,” Renji said, grinning. “You just thought you’d come by and visit some old friends.”

“Exactly.”

“You just wanted to catch up with us.”

“Right.”

“And it has nothing to do with you avoiding Orihime.”

Ichigo paled as his head snapped up. “What?”

“She called here looking for you about half an hour ago,” Renji said as he shrugged. “But I don’t know why you’re going through so much trouble to avoid her, man. I mean, her candies can’t be that bad.”

With a smirk Ichigo told him, “They are, but that’s not it.”

“Then what is it?”

“I don’t know,” Ichigo said as he stood up and began to pace.

“What? You like her?” Renji asked.

“Yes.“

“She likes you.”

“Yes.”

“So then what’s the problem? You two obviously have feelings for each other. Why don’t you get off your lazy ass and finally do something about it.”

“Because.”

“Because what?”

“Because I don’t want to see her get hurt because of me!” Ichigo exploded. “The girl’s been through enough already! First fallowing me to save Rukia, and then this whole business with Aizen. You know he’s not dead, Renji. And you know he’ll come after us eventually. I mean, he already wants her power, if he finds out she’s with me, that’s just something else he can use against her. And against me. She’s my kryptonite,” he ended in a whisper.

Ichigo had been so caught up with his ranting, that he didn’t notice that Renji had gotten up from the couch and walked over to him. At least not until Renji’s fist connected with his head.

“Ouch! What the hell was that for?”

“For being such a dumbass,” Renji said as he stared Ichigo down. “You just said it yourself, Aizen is already after Orihime. So what difference does it make if you two are together? You should jump at this opportunity to be with her, man. You don’t know how many other chances you’ll get.”

Ichigo glared back for all he was worth. But in the end, he buckled under Renji’s scrutiny and - although he hated to admit it - his logic.

Sinking back down onto the chair, he rubbed his hands on the back of his neck. “Yeah,” he said finally. “I guess you’re right.”

With a Cheshire grin, Renji leaned back on the couch, “Of course I am. And besides, you got it all wrong man.”

“What?”

“Your girl should never be your weakness. Your “kryptonite”. Your girl should give you strength, purpose, hope.”

Ichigo looked over at his friend and smiled. “It’s a sad day in the world when you turn into the voice of reason.”

Laughing, Renji flicked the ash off his cigarette into the ashtray. “Tell me about it. Now get your ass out of here and go see your girl. Or actually…go get some antacids and then go see your girl.”

“Sounds like a good idea,” Ichigo said as he opened the front door. “I’ll see you around.”

“See ya.”

“Oh, and Renji…”

“Yeah.”

“Thanks man.” And with that parting remark, Ichigo was out the door.

Renji let out a heavy sigh, and leaned back into the couch. Running a hand through his loose hair he muttered to himself, “Our little boy is all grown up.” Louder he said, “So just how long have you been standing there, little girl?”

“Since he got here,” Rukia said as she peeked out from behind the hall corridor.

Nodding, Renji said, “So I guess I don’t have to give you a play by play, then?”

“Nope,” she said as she walked over. “Did you really mean what you said?” she asked as she straddled his hips.

“About what?”

“About your girl being your strength,” her fingers played with the hairs on the back of his neck. “Did you really mean that, Renji.”

Smiling, Renji stabbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, and cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs making sweeping motions over her jaw; and pulled her closer so that her forehead rested against his. “Every word of it.”

Grinning like a fool, Rukia leaned in and kissed him senseless.

“Come on,” she said a few minutes later, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “I’ve got your chocolates waiting for you in the bedroom.”
