Want the pretty

So I was randomly skipping around through the forking zmillions of fanvids on my hard drive (I'm insane and there are folders within folders within folders) and I found myself watching some ridiculous Roswell vid that I'd clearly saved simply because it's just one yummy image of Jason Behr after another. I may not twist and contort his faux-alien ( Read more... )

I have to say I enjoyed "Roswell" mostly for the pretty because after S1 the show just seemed to be chock full of plot threads going in all directions that didn't hang together well. I doubt I would have watched a S3. But I'm curious too if there has been Spike/Ford fic, or even Spike/Max crossover stuff. I seem to think I read the latter once somewhere but it must have been a while ago.

It's interesting but pretty much EVERYONE in Roswell fandom thinks the show "jumped the shark" after S1 or very early in S2. (BTW, there was a S3 but it was only like 18 eps or something.) And that's not just the zealous Max/Liz shippers, it's everyone. Consensus.

But in some ways, "failed" shows make for good fic too because if the premise is interesting but the execution is flawed then there's a lot of impetus. A lot of the "classic" Roswell fic is of the "fix it" or "rewrite it" variety. Most of it really. And there's hardly any post-finale fic since almost no one feels like accepting all of canon up until then.

I once read a Spike/Isabel crossover fic that didn't suck but I have no idea where I found it. If there is any crossover slash, it is most likely written by someone outside of Roswell fandom proper because it is a very strange fandom that is a) prodominantly made up of people who aren't involved in any other fandom or like, even know that Live Journal exists and b) in comparison far, far more prudish and dominated ( ... )

I'm a first episode of S3 shark jumper... well, really I'm a "what do you mean it wasn't all a mindwarp?" season 2 end but I don't know if that counts.

You're right I was probably being extreme but I have yet to meet someone who doesn't think it went off before or during S3. It just amazes me the passionate devotion of Roswell fans to the dream of something that almost everyone thinks got fucked up. And a lot of the most hardcore fans are the ones that with the strongest opinions about how it got fucked up.

That's right there were 2 seasons on WB and then one on UPN, right? Yes, I think I saw only the last episode of the UPN run because I wanted to see how things ended (I think the answer is "at hyperspeed"). I started watching Roswell, BtVS and AtS all at the same time and by the time Roswell moved I had lost interest and was very into the other two shows.

That's interesting how different Roswell fandom is. But in a way it isn't that surprising. Short of the sci-fi angle it was a rather conventional teen drama and probably attracted a lot more people who were just into the show and who see it as more of an unusual soap opera. By comparison BtVS/AtS draws on a lot of different genres and their themes can run pretty dark. Chances are BtVS fans were more interested in Roswell than the reverse. But yes, a great opportunity for fic with all the storylines gone horribly wrong.
