But in some ways, "failed" shows make for good fic too because if the premise is interesting but the execution is flawed then there's a lot of impetus. A lot of the "classic" Roswell fic is of the "fix it" or "rewrite it" variety. Most of it really. And there's hardly any post-finale fic since almost no one feels like accepting all of canon up until then.
I once read a Spike/Isabel crossover fic that didn't suck but I have no idea where I found it. If there is any crossover slash, it is most likely written by someone outside of Roswell fandom proper because it is a very strange fandom that is a) prodominantly made up of people who aren't involved in any other fandom or like, even know that Live Journal exists and b) in comparison far, far more prudish and dominated ( ... )

That's interesting how different Roswell fandom is. But in a way it isn't that surprising. Short of the sci-fi angle it was a rather conventional teen drama and probably attracted a lot more people who were just into the show and who see it as more of an unusual soap opera. By comparison BtVS/AtS draws on a lot of different genres and their themes can run pretty dark. Chances are BtVS fans were more interested in Roswell than the reverse. But yes, a great opportunity for fic with all the storylines gone horribly wrong.
