So. Here's the thing. I never cry at TV, usually. And when I do it's famously (ha!) when women are getting empowered, like say during documentaries about suffragettes or the Buffy series finale. But crying this time was largely because I just have a strong sentimental attachment to these characters and this universe, even if I was sometimes lukewarm in the later seasons on certain aspects of the plot, etc. Lane! Luke! Kirk! Babette and Miss Patty! SOOKIE! Everybody!

But, I realize now that this was the longest that I watched any TV show on a weekly basis in real time. And I started watching it the first year that I moved away from New England. So yeah, I mean, it was a show about pop culture junkie women from small town New England who talked too fast--how exactly could *I* not watch it?

This finale was mellow, but that's okay. And I'm really glad that Rory's going off to conquer the world. And I was also glad to hear her express/experience fear and disappointment in these last few episodes. And I just remembered that another thing that always makes me cry is GRADUATIONS. Seriously, I hear the music and I tear up. I am very emotionally invested in women and intellectual/scholastic achievement. That is so nerdy, I know, but it is true.

So even though I will continue to 'ship Rory/Dean like nobody's business and seeing Jared play grown-up!Dean would give me shivers, I'm glad that he didn't show up and swoop her off her feet at the end of the show (that no one did). I appreciated the emphasis on Rory and Lorelai's relationship, which was the core of the show. This reminds me of how I was glad they didn't spend more time than they did on settling Buffy's love life in "Chosen" (NOT just because I'm bi-vamp and I like the open-endedness for my OT3).

Oh show, it was time, I guess, but I will miss you.

And despite all that, a rec for an AU version:

++++ One True Thing by dontyouwaitup - PG - Rory/Dean - Rory graduates. The town celebrates. And one time seven years ago Dean Forester built her a car.

Okay, sleep now.
