Secret Picnic (2004)
Color, Sound on Mini-DV transferred from 16mm
Genre: Experimental narrative
Running Time: 9 min. 20 seconds
Brief description: With fake flowers, pink cakes and sun umbrellas, Secret Picnic is an experimental narrative about three fags who confront their sexually abusive pasts at a joyous queer picnic. Animated queer heart ring technology transports them from their everyday lives to their colorful, bubbly, and bright heaven on earth. Yet there is a unavoidable hell waiting in their picnic basket symbolized by a pad lock, a pink phone and a pair of high heels.
This color 16mm film explores stereotypes of queers including abuse, sex work and locker room beatings through three true story flashbacks. Queer space is celebrated but inevitably haunted by repressed trauma complicated by queer identity. They all finally confront and escape painful memories with their heart rings and a near-death experience menacing them with knives and crows. With an original soundtrack mix sampling old movie soundtracks, queer punk rock, locker slamming and original cello music, Secret Picnic is an adventure of delight, horror and triumph in drop dead color and bird tweeting chaos.
