Canon Resource Link: Whoo boy. I'm not sure if there's any site out there that covers the entirety of Sonic the Hedgehog's plot-hole-filled canon. I'll go over it myself.
As with (almost) every Sonic the Hedgehog character, Rouge's background and origin story are largely unknown. However, she first appears in Sonic Adventure 2 as a rival to Knuckles. While trying to steal the Master Emerald, a large gem of great power whose protection Knuckles has been entrusted to, Dr. Eggman suddenly appears and steals it. To save it, Knuckles, of course, ends up smashing it into pieces. After getting mad at him for breaking such a beautiful jewel, the treasure hunter immediately sets out to steal back the now-scattered shards of the Master Emerald - racing against its owner, of course.
Along the way, she meets up with Dr. Eggman, sneaking into his secret base, and makes a deal with him - if he gives her a device to track pieces of the Master Emerald with, she'll help him collect the Chaos Emeralds ( 7 smaller versions of the Master Emerald that contain large amounts of energy ) to power his latest convoluted doomsday device. The two have an agreement. Shadow the Hedgehog is also helping Dr. Eggman as payment for awakening the hedgehog from his 50-year containment. The original Dark Team unites!
The trio discovers that three Chaos Emeralds are located in a security warehouse owned by the governmental corporation GUN, and makes plans to go there. In order to secure their safety and leave no tracks, Dr. Eggman sets a bomb for 10 minutes on the island. While Shadow is fending off Sonic and setting up the bomb, Rouge enters the facility and successfully steals the emeralds - however, at the end of her escapade, a GUN trooper appears and delays her long enough that there's not enough time to escape. Rouge, tired from the battle and realizing her own defeat, slumps down and tells Eggman wrly that she can't make it. However, in the nick of time, Shadow uses his Chaos Control power ( which allows him to teleport ) to rescue Rouge and the Chaos Emeralds right before the facility (and the island) explode. Rouge is rather surprised at this action and questions Shadow about it, but he, being ever-surly, does not give a straight answer.
The trio goes to space to land on Space Colony ARK, where Shadow was born 50 years ago, and where Eggman's doomsday weapon, the Eclipse Cannon happens to be located - it's a leftover of his grandfather's research. With this large number of Chaos Emeralds gathered, Eggman is just about ready to give a test run of his doomsday cannon - which he uses to partially blow up the moon. How nice.
Rouge confronts Knuckles one last time and the two argue incessantly about who gets to keep the shards of the Master Emeralds - each has one half of the whole number of shards. The two battle, but Rouge ultimately loses, almost falling to her death - except that Knuckles saves her. In ( extremely reluctant, not admitted ) gratitude, she hands over the rest of the Master Emerald shards to Knuckles.
Back in the base, Rouge is carefully taking notes on the device that Eggman is using, but more importantly, on the information she's recovering about Shadow. More than just a simple treasure hunter, she's actually a secret agent of GUN, and is collecting information on 'Project Shadow' - the original and heavily-covered-up science project by Eggman's grandfather that ended 50 years ago. Shadow catches her in the act, unfortunately for Rouge - she's also trying to steal the Chaos Emeralds, since she just loves gems so much. Rouge dumps some rather disturbing information on Shadow - the idea that he might not actually be Shadow - but Shadow threatens to kill her if she takes the Emeralds, so she refrains.
things go to crap when Eggman uses the Eclipse Cannon, and basically, the whole ARK wakes up and retaliates against them. Sonic and Shadow team up and use the Chaos Emeralds to become more powerful, then fly out and destroy the monster awakened by the colony, which is driving the whole thing towards the Earth. Unfortunately, Shadow dies in the process.
Or did he? In Sonic Heroes, Rouge is looking for treasure once again and ends up in a hidden laboratory. When she walks in, she finds Shadow sealed up in a tank of green goo. She goes to unlock the tank, surprised at the contents, when suddenly a huge friggin robot comes out and starts blowing everything up. Shadow leaps out to defend Rouge and starts to fight the robot, but she splits them up and tells them to quit it. After talking to both of them ( the robot, named Omega, hates Omega for locking him up in a room, and 'Shadow' can't remember anything at all ), she decides to form a team with them to look for Eggman together.
The threesome eventually find their way to Eggman's secret room, where Rouge finds not Eggman's treasure, but a room full of Shadows as well. Rouge leaps to the conclusion that the Shadow she's found is a robot, but Omega notes that the original must exist somewhere for clones to exist. Defeated over the lack of treasure and disturbed by the findings about her friend, Rouge puts on an energetic face decides that she might as well go bother Knuckles and try and steal his emerald again.
When robot? clone? real? Shadow gets some time in the limelight in Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge appears on the side of GUN, who is defending Earth against both Eggman and the alien invaders known as Black Arms. While she has little effect on the overall plot (as it's about Shadow discovering himself), she provides support and direction for her enigmatic hedgehog friend throughout. ( For the record, it's the real Shadow she found... an important bit of information that maybe, just maybe, would have been better included at a time other than 8 minutes into the final battle )
Later, in Sonic the Hedgehog, Shadow has come to terms with his past, and is now Rouge's partner in GUN for the time being. The two of them steal a precious artifact, the Scepter of Darkness, for a mission; however, when Eggman catches them taking it, he tries to steal it and ends up breaking it, unleashing the evil creature, Mephiles, within. He sends Rouge and Shadow into the future, where they find Omega rusted and defunct. The bat thief runs off to do what she's good at - finding Chaos Emeralds so that they can warp time and go back to the present. Rouge returns, but then realizes that Shadow has remained in the future; therefore, she goes to find Omega and programs him to wake up in the future to help Shadow. The three of them go through some trouble trying to stop Mephiles; in the process, Omega learns that in the future, Shadow will once again become an enemy of Earth, and Omega himself will be the one to imprison him. Upon hearing this information, the three become melancholy, but Rouge promises to stick up for Shadow no matter what, and in the end, the bond between the three is only strengthened.
Mephiles ends up forming together with his 'brother,' Iblis, and threatens to destroy time and space as they know it. Rouge assissts the others in gathering all the Chaos Emeralds so that they can bring Sonic back to life ( long story ) and then use them to empower Sonic, Shadow and Silver to fight back the god-like creature that threatens them. They have success, but in the end, Sonic is forced to erase time all the way back to when Iblis and Mephiles were created. Therefore, all of the events in the game become moot. Rouge won't remember any events of this game.
Personality: Rouge is a very tough and very ambitious young woman. As someone who balances the roles of intelligent spy, alluring thief, and reliable ally, she has a very strategic mind and always plots the best route to get what she wants. She's flirtatious and a big tease, which seems to be purely for her own amusement - she likes watching other characters, particularly Knuckles, squirm. She has a fairly large ego and is typically rather vain about the condition of herself and the things around her - she likes things to be neat and clean. Stupid people irritate her and often bring out a cynical side in her; if she doesn't agree with something, you'll most definitely know it. She also likes it when things go her way - if she wants something, she's gonna try real hard to get it. Fortunately, she's logical enough to know when to stop... which is occasionally at the very border of 'going too far.' In particular, she has a huge obession with beautiful jewels and riches and will go way out of her way to obtain and admire them. This includes but is not limited to trickery, backstabbing and stealing. She's an anti-hero for a reason.
This isn't to say that Rouge is a complete blackhearted scoundrel of a bat. While she's quite fond of herself and prizes her desires, she's also highly intelligent and can see past them if something really bad comes up. Which is just about every game. She'll put aside her personal wants for the greater good; indeed, the safety of the world she lives on and her friends seems highly important to her. She has also shown a rarely-seen tender side to her friends Omega and especially Shadow; Rouge genuinely cares and worries about both of them, and for Shadow even seems willing to put her own life on the line. They're both her trusted teammates, and if it came down to it, there's little doubt that she would stick up for them against all odds.
Rouge is mainly driven by what she wants. She doesn't seem to have an overall goal other than to become rich, powerful and beautiful - oftentimes, she gets involved in the plot or story seemingly on a whim to go and find some gems ( or Emeralds. ) She's also very loyal to the government, remaining content in her position of secret agent without complaint - she follows their orders without objection for the most part. However, she usually seems to go simply where the wind of desire blows her.
What your character can offer: Like most Sonic characters, Rouge can run especially fast and also has enhanced strength. While not blessed with a particular power, she has very strong legs, and her kicking attacks seem to be quite devastating. As a treasure hunter, Rouge has a talent for digging as well; she can dig straight into the ground just about anywhere with the right modifications to her boots.
Obviously, since she's a bat, she can fly, although these abilities are limited. If she's carrying people, she gets tired out pretty fast, and she seems to prefer to glide rather than straight-out flying. Additionally, since she's a bat, she has sensitive ears, and can also pick up sonar as well as emit it.
Rouge is skilled with computers and probably a few other kinds of machinery. It seems she usually carries around a detector for Emeralds or simply has a knack for finding what she needs to find.
What items will they be bringing with them? Digging boots, if possible?
Third-Person Sample: "This place really stinks."
The white bat wrinkled her nose in disgust as she opened the door to what was apparently her new home. Honestly, of all the low-down, overrun toxic waste dumps she'd ever been to, this Discedo was the very worst. Nothing but gray skies and torn-up buildings and weird, vicious creatures everywhere. Not to mention the lovely group of characters that had amassed here. She dearly hoped she didn't have to deal with a roommate. The place already smelled like something died and rotted a week ago. Making it livable for just one person was going to be a chore. Come to think of it, there probably were dead and rotting things in the walls. Disgusting.
But she'd make do with what she had. Rouge would hold onto the hope that they at least had a working bath or shower. With a defeated sigh and a reluctant step, she entered her grimy abode. From the sound of things, she wasn't going to get out of this pit any time soon unless she got lucky. She brushed off the top of the dusty bed quickly and sat down. It was a human-sized bed, of course. Way too big. Better than too small, she supposed.
Now, what should she do? The chances of finding a beautiful, precious gemstone - even just a tiny one - in this kind of place seemed abysmally low. Ugh. Just wasting away her precious youthful years... Well, she'd think of something. Not like sitting around and complaining about it was going to fix anything - at least, not until she found the right people to complain to. Or at least someone to listen. But, first order of business - clean up her room!
... Of course, the first task would be finding something to clean it with. Back to square one...
First-Person Sample: [ the communicator clicks on into video mode, being held quite close to a round white face and two bright green eyes staring up from heavily-lacquered eyelids. There's a moment of button-clicking, and then the video zooms out to reveal a buxom and irritated-looking bat girl. She nods at the communicator, then glances back over her shoulder down the road. ]
This place is a dump! Honestly, who thought it would be a good idea to put a girl like me here?
[ she huffs, then turns back to the communicator with a serious, annoyed look. ]
It looks like this is a communicator, so listen up, buddy. Whoever you are, if you think playing tricks on me is going to make me hand any of those gems over, you're wrong. Now be a good boy and show me the way out before things get personal. Sound good?
[ tapping her foot. she's waiting! ]
