All I have to do is think of her.

Di Radfield had managed to make her way to America two years after Fiamma’s death. She was still so young, only around 18, but she was smarter than before and brave. She was content to wander the streets and towns alone, looking for something that felt right, a place to stay.

She had stopped outside a small coffee shop and headed inside, ordering herself a coffee and paying with the last few coins she had. She sorely needed somewhere to stay and asked the woman who served her. It turned out that the woman had a room free.

“If you don’t mind dealing with my teenage brat.”

“Oh no, I don’t mind at all.”

Di was smiling as she thanked the woman and when the coffee shop was empty she had suggested she work for free as a way to pay her rent. The woman had agreed, leading Di to her house and letting her in.

Anna-Beth had introduced her daughter, Chloe, who was only a year older but thought herself a genius.

“And who the fuck are you?”

“Di Radfield, your mother offered me a place to stay.”

“Stay the hell out of my way.”

Di had agreed and let herself be lead to the room, looking around as she unpacked what little she had and settling a photo of herself, Poppy and Fiamma on the desk. She had liked the girl, even if she never showed it.

The weeks had passed quickly and soon Anna-Beth invited Di to stay on for another few months. Di had agreed instantly. She had settled in well enough and seemed to be liking having a mother-figure. Anna’s daughter, Chloe, had warmed to her slightly and the two were planning to shop for clothes next week.

When they were shopping Chloe had made excuses for sharing a cubicle and eventually Di had called her on it.

“I think you fancy me.”

“Maybe.”

“Why didn’t you just say?”

The girl had fallen silent and despite being shorter and a year younger Di had backed her into the wall, kissing her softly.

“I’m not afraid of it.”

Chloe had relaxed then, the two laughing and talking as they shopped, Anna-Beth seemingly pleased when Chloe suggested Di move into her room.

That night the two had lain in bed together, Di telling Chloe about her life at school and Miss G. Chloe had seemed slightly shocked but held her close and stroking her hair lovingly.

“She didn’t deserve you.”

Di had been unable to hide her emotion then, finding herself surprised when Chloe kissed away her tears, seemingly willing to be as slow as she needed.

Within a week the two were officially out and working together at the café.

They had made love only once Di swore she wasn’t leaving, Chloe tender and sweet with her the entire time.
