This is DELIGHTFUL. Natalie and Janette interacting is something we got FAR too little of. And the comments about Schanke and the food and .... the fact that Janette and Natalie had this moment or two of UNDERSTANDing each other and being mutually amussed .... and Nick being like, "Them. Together. NOT GOOD." ... and Nick and Nat joining forces to tease Janette together .... and Janette being impressed (though what else would she be) by Natalie and.... her little thoughts about what Nick really ought to explain to Nat ...and the VOICE is SO JANETTE and....

I LOVE this. I love that, in my head, it totally slides into canon and would FIT with all their exchanges afterwards. I love that it's set early on when you CAN write about the vibrancy because it's still there.

I am BEYOND thrilled with this and am looking forward to reading it again when it's not the middle of the night (ironic, that). :-)

Thank you so much! Natalie and Janette needed MORE scenes together on the show, because they have just so commonalities underneath it all!

And Nick got to tease Janette. Oh, that was to die for to write! And he got worried about Natalie and Janette in the same room, and you bet it wasn't that he was worried for either of them, of course.

Janette's voice! Oh, she's so awesome. As is Natalie!

I'm beyond thrilled that you love this so.

>"Janette's POV is hard to write."

Yes, it is! Janette is a character of silences and things unsaid, of what is going on behind a lifted brow or tilted chin. It's very hard to translate that into narrative.

You did fine here, but I think perhaps you should practice more. ;-) How about a brand-new Janette story every month until you thoroughly and beyond-doubt master her POV? ;-)

>"And Nick got to tease Janette. Oh, that was to die for to write!"

That's my favorite bit of this piece! Oh, beloved first season, where there is balance and wholeness and hope.

Yes. Oh. Yes, it really is. I had originally started trying to write this in third person omniscient, and it just wasn't working.

Oh, beloved first season, where there is balance and wholeness and hope.

*points and nods in silent-yet-heartfelt agreement*

I almost forgot to ask! Please consider sharing "Could They Choose Between" on fkfic-l when you have a chance! This would be a delight to have on list.

And by the way, abby82 just gave it a complimentary call-out this evening.

This is wonderful. I can just see Janette shoving that chicken away and shooting daggers at Nick. I really enjoyed reading this.

*giggling* Poor Janette has to put up with a LOT when Nick gets his impish streak on. :) Thank you so much!

I like this. It brings to mind the scene with Natalie getting "evidence" from Nick and Janette at the end of "Fate Worse Than Death," with Natalie calmly accepting their versions of what took place, knowing she'll have to falsify records. One can almost sense a certain grudging admiration on Janette's part for this professional, no-nonsense mortal (even if her fashion sense IS appalling!). Your Janette here is similar, being drawn into Natalie's world almost against her will, yet not without a sense of respect for the courage and determination she finds there. Since the only real "profession" for women in Janette's mortal days was a completely hateful one, it must give her pause even after all these years to see a woman so well educated and in charge of herself.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
