On science and research

I believe in science and research. I think it's amazing when cures for diseases are found or a woman who is deemed infertile can have a baby. I surely wouldn't want an incurable disease, nor would I want anyone I love to die from one. I already lost my dad to something no one knew how to cure.

BUT...

As science progresses and finds cures for more and more diseases and ways to help improve longevity, are we not heading for catastrophe? Let's play Devil's Advocate for just a moment.

Let's suppose science finds a cure for 50% of the disease that kills millions of people each year. Let's also suppose science finds a way to help us live longer than we would, were we left to our own devices (and fate). And let's not forget more people are born each year than die (from disease and natural causes).

Where shall we put all these people 100 or 200 years from now and how shall we feed them?

There are women like my daughter, who even 20 years ago wouldn't ever have had a chance to get pregnant were it not for science. But if we cure the illnesses, cure infertility and increase longevity, are we heading for disaster?

Or will Mother Nature continue to find ways to weed out and keep the population under control?

I personally would like to see how far we can go...what we can conquer and accomplish through science, but can we go too far?

It's just a question...I'm curious to see what others think about this.
