The very cool blog,
Pam's House Blend, posted yesterday that the DFW-area HRC was having a membership orientation as "a fun, laid-back evening" today from 6:30-8pm that would conflict with Transgender Day of Remembrance events in Forth Worth and in Dallas at 7pm. This information about one local chapter has been picked up and is being disseminated as an example of HRC's lack of respect for trans-inclusion.
I emailed DFW HRC to express my concern that they would schedule this way, especially after using a meeting of the area trans group last year to try to build bridges and explain ENDA. While I remain critical of HRC, I did promise to redress what appears to be an incorrect charge of trans-ignorance and ignoring in this case. Here is the email reply I got.
Hi, [my name]. Thank you for your concern regarding this oversight. The DFW Federal Club holds a monthly meeting to educate our new members (averages only about 6-10 people) on the work of HRC, including such issues as ENDA and Hate Crimes. This meeting was scheduled as a normal occurence, and therefore, posted on our website back in January.
We have cancelled this meeting in observance of this day and have encouraged our members to attend the Day of Remembrance services. I hope that clears things up. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Cathi Scalise
DFW Federal Club Co-Chair
