I hold that old school second wave view that state-validated marriage is irredeemable, that love should not be tied to the state. Add to that the view that we should fight to include everyone (single, widowed, divorced, etc.) in rights of affiliation rather than trying to be mainstream and that in an age of computer tracking for identities there are better ways for people to designate their legal ties (power of attorney, inheritance, etc.) than through marriage.
I am glad California's Supreme Court recognizes the separate is not equal aspect of this issue even if it isn't my issue. I hope it doesn't blow into a red herring for the presidential elections again and distract us from the war and the economy.
So it is funny that my reaction to the Mother Jone's
commentary on gay marriage--with its predictable human interest angle--was to tear up. I will probably always have a soft sport for lesbians old enough to have adult children.
