Hey Spartan! MSU grad here. I lived in East Lansing for about 12 years before moving to South Lyon when my husband and I got jobs in this area.

I don't really remember the differences in prices in E.L. but I remember being vaguely aware that Meijer's was generally the cheapest around. However my husband and I often went to Kroger's or Farmer Jack's because we liked thought the quality was better.

Here's an odd thing though - when I was working in Dearborn I used to occasionally buy produce at the middle-eastern grocery store there because 1.) it was awesome and 2.) it was so much cheaper than anywhere else. I couldn't begin to explain why (I have no idea of the economics behind it) but it was my favorite grocery store in the world.

I just recently read an article in the Detroit News about cutting your grocery bills, and they also recommended going to ethnic or farmer's markets for produce and meats, as they may be cheaper than the chain grocery stores.

Not sure if this adds any light to your question but I thought I'd throw that out there.
